In the late spring on May 26 at 20:00 in «the Place» club we present «Murnau jam», which is a part of a big theater project «Faust».
«Murnau-jam» is based on a seemingly simple composition. Spectators are watching a masterpiece of German silent cinema - the film «Faust» by Friedrich Murnau. It is a film of 1926. And the actors and musicians of «Teatrika» give voice to the film.
But it is not that simple.
Improvisation with musical and not just musical instruments has long been an integral part of theatrical performance of «Faust» Goethe which Teatrika started to research firmly in the summer of 2009.
Music in this performance is being composed on the fly by the actors, it actually sounds once. And throughout the time that has elapsed since the beginning of the rehearsal process this principle has been maintained, despite the fact that over the past period dozens of interesting musical themes and melodies has been born. In our «Faust» an organic support and complement the theme unfolding in scenes of the play that are based on the same live improvisation – this all is the task of musical accompaniment.
Teatrika decided to use the same «stream» approach to music-making for sound support of the silent film of Murnau. Due to expression, purity of composition, playing with light and shadow, expressiveness of the characters - in other words, the unforgettable visuals, «Faust» of Murnau has its deserved popularity in the circles of avant-garde musicians. However, the version of Teatrika naturally takes the whole thematism and the experience of participants.
The result of a collision between two views - the great director of silent films and modern theater laboratory - the great works of world literature may be natural or discouraging, clear or unclear, but certainly not uninteresting.
